ABOUT US & CONTACT

about us.

QLD Camping Bears (QCB) began on 3 September 2020 with a simple idea: bring a group of LGBTQIA+ people together for a camping trip.

For many of us, finding a place to connect, belong and be ourselves has not always been easy. What started as one trip has grown into a community of more than 2,000 people brought together by a shared love of the outdoors, friendship and connection.

QCB operates on a not-for-profit basis and exists to help reduce social isolation, support wellbeing and create welcoming opportunities for LGBTQIA+ people, their friends and allies to connect through camping, outdoor activities and social experiences. We aim to make those opportunities accessible to people across Queensland and Northern NSW, including those living in regional communities.

At the heart of QCB is something simple: a place where you can belong as you are. Diverse, open, proud and, for many of us, a chosen family.

FAQ's

All QLD Camping Bears operations, communications, event management, marketing, are managed by our Committee Members.

If you ever have any questions or queries, you can reach them either via social media or via qldcampingbears@gmail.com

Though our group was founded by bears, we welcome EVERYONE in the LGBTQIA+ community who seeks to enjoy the beautiful outdoors our region has to offer.

All genders, sexualities, whether binary or non are welcome.

QLD Camping Bears prides itself on encouraging and welcoming diversity.

We hold camping trips 6 times a year and always outside QLD School Holidays:

January (Last weekend), March, May (Long Weekend), July, September (First weekend, Anniversary on 3rd), November with dates listed well in advance.

In between we hold single day events of a wide variety but often with a focus on outdoors ranging from hikes, beach days, pool parties, picnics, bbq’s, drive-in movies, kayaking, axe throwing, rock climbing, etc.

We rotate the locations for camping and events across South East QLD, and Far North NSW to ensure our members have equal opportunity to attend events not too far from home.

Camping trips usually have 40-60 attending, where as single day events have 10-30 on average.

All of us were you once. Some of us grew up camping, others didn’t try it until we were adults and we all figured out what works best for us.

There are a wide variety of campers from those in tents and swags, to those in camper trailers and caravans. Some even choose to sleep in vans or the backs of their cars, whatever works for you is fine.

In terms of gear, you do not need to go out and buy everything you see and think that’s meant for you, that’s the part you figure out with time as you personalise your gear to suit you, your finances, lifestyle, storage, etc.

We recommend everyone start simple with a tent, air mattress, esky, and maybe a cooker. With these and other items you would have at home you will manage a 1-2 night weekend away with ease. If you don’t have them and are unsure about making the financial commitment, borrow or ask a friend who has gear to come with you for your first trip!

On a Friday, people tend to arrive throughout the day, as they begin to set up their space which is near to everyone else’s, they begin to meet people who greet them on arrival, offer to help if they need assistance and then once they’re set up they can settle in.

Friday evening rolls in and you will smell smoke around 5pm indicating the central fire has been lit which invites people to gather around, socialise and meet others. You will see people come and go as some will cook dinner and then join after.

People will drink, chat and get to know each other, if they already know each other well, this is a great time to catch up as we so often do.

People go to bed at various times depending on their body clock and how they’re feeling. Always be mindful of that and try not to be too noisy late in the evening.

Sometimes there might be activities throughout the weekend, these will often be announced ahead of time, but we very much allow for people to “choose their own adventure” meaning if they want to hang with others they can, some during the day will go into nearby towns for markets, shopping, some will go 4X4 driving, swimming if the weather allows, etc.

It’s up to you and what you feel comfortable with.

I always recommend those who are nervous to come to a single day event like a hiking trip or BBQ. There is less pressure involved and you can bring whomever you like if needed.

The benefit of coming to a camping trip is you get to decide how much or how little you choose to interact and with whom you do so. You bring your safe space with you.

Every single event we have had has always had at least one person like you whom it will be their first event, rest assured we are very welcoming and look forward to meeting you.

While there are single members in the group, many are also couples, and while we are all for people getting to know each other (whatever people do consensually in their tents is between them), the idea is to make real connections, get to know people, etc.

If you’re coming expecting a cruising beat, an orgy, or a drug fest then i’m afraid you’re going to leave rather disappointed.

Please note consent both physical and visual is always required, never implied, and can be rescinded at any given time without required explanation. The safety and welfare of our members is of the utmost importance.

In the end we want everyone to have a safe and fun time.
